Biloela waste clean-up

What’s happening?

As Queensland’s environmental regulator, we are coordinating clean-up work at an alleged unlawful waste storage site on Callide Street, Biloela.

Despite repeated enforcement action, the responsible parties have failed to comply with lawful directions to remediate the site or remove hazardous waste and protect the community and environment.

The site includes a significant quantity of hazardous chemicals and scrap metal including open waste-oil drums, aerosol cans, oil filters and fire extinguishers.

We have already completed emergency, temporary containment and site stabilisation work to protect local properties and waterways.

Specialist hazardous waste experts will be on-site from 13 October until the end of March 2027 and environmental officers will be closely monitoring the clean-up progress.

The clean-up will mostly happen during daylight hours, from Monday to Saturday, with some activities potentially required outside these times when operationally necessary.

There may be times when noise or odour is noticeable around the site.

We continue to work closely with neighbours, Banana Shire Council, Queensland Fire Department, Queensland Police Service and Queensland Health.

Our investigation, compliance and enforcement activities are continuing.
