How to apply

Pre-lodgement service

The department offers a pre-lodgement service to assist applicants through the process. This service includes a meeting with a department officer to discuss the information that must be included in your application.

To use this service:

  • complete the online application for pre-lodgement services using the provided link.
  • when the form is submitted online, it is automatically sent to the department – you do not need to email it separately.

The department will review your request, and a department officer will contact you to arrange a meeting.

Application steps

  1. determine whether you need a low risk or high risk species management program
  2. complete the relevant species management program application form
  3. submit the completed application and supporting documents to wildlife@detsi.qld.gov.au

Processing times

  • Standard processing: up to 40 business days
  • Additional information requests may add up to 20 business days to the processing time.

Tip: to avoid delays, ensure your application is detailed, complete, includes all required supporting documents, and does not contain irrelevant information.

Reporting obligations

If your species management program is approved, you must keep an animal breeding place register (XLSX, 86.5KB) . This register must include details of all authorised activities and must be submitted to wildlife.operations@detsi.qld.gov.au

Low risk species management program:

  • submit the register annually (from the date of approval); and
  • submit the register within 10 business days after the program expires, even if no breeding places were tampered with.

High risk species management program:

  • submit the register every six (6) months (from the date of approval); and
  • submit the register within 10 business days after the program expires, even if no breeding places were tampered with.

Duration of approval

The approval period for a species management program must match the activity being undertaken and comply with the terms outlined on the application form. The approval will remain valid until:

  • three (3) years from the date of approval; or
  • a nominated end date that is within three (3) years from the date the application form was signed; or
  • for an amendment application, the existing expiry date of the original approval (unless the amendment seeks to extend the approval period to the full three (3) years).

Make sure the duration you request is appropriate for the scope of your activities and allows enough time to meet your reporting and monitoring obligations.
