Harvest macropod damage mitigation permit quota information
Background
In Queensland, red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus), common wallaroo (Osphranter robustus) and eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) may be taken under a damage mitigation permit where they are causing, or are likely to cause, damage or loss, or pose a threat to human health or well being.
Damage mitigation permits are issued under the Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation 2020. Under the Nature Conservation (Macropod) Conservation Plan 2017 (the Macropod Conservation Plan), a damage mitigation permit (non-commercial) harvest quota applies to each harvest species. The quota is limited to 2% of the estimated population of each species within each harvest zone during the annual harvest period (1 January to 31 December). Population estimates are based on annual aerial macropod surveys undertaken by the department.
The tables below show damage mitigation permit (non-commercial) harvest quotas, the number of macropods authorised under permits granted, and the percentage of quota authorised for harvest macropod species in Queensland. Queensland contains five harvest zones (zones 1 to 5) and a non-harvest zone where harvest quotas do not apply. Harvest quotas may be reviewed in response to changing conditions such as drought or disease. If the harvest approaches the annual quota, the harvest period may be closed earlier.
